TYPEWALLS Collection
Wortical
This typographical pinstripe weaves letters into lines
Background
A classic theme in wallpaper design is the use of vertical stripes that emphasize the room’s height while decorating the wall space. This type of pattern was the inspiration for this design. ‘What interested me was the appearance of the design depending on the distances of the viewer. The closer you get, the more you see the different letters, which, as a text, could convey meaning. The further you move away from the surface, the more you start to see the vertical stripes.’ (Martin Wenzel) These stripes, though straight and regular, are also dynamic, for the height of the letters always varies. An overall structured appearance showing an ordered bustle of characters at the same time.
Who is Martin Wenzel?
‘Ich bin ein Berliner’, still, he spent 12 years of his life in the Netherlands, studying design and typography the Royal Academy, the Hague, after which he worked for Petr van Blokland. For more than 15 years now, Martin has been back in his home town, working as a full time font designer and developer, running supertype.de together with his partner in type, Jürgen Huber. He teaches Typography at the HTW University, Berlin.
