Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita
The origin of this design is a woodcut from Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868-1944). De Mesquita, a teacher of M.C. Escher, was a multi-talented artist working the beginning of the 20th century. His oeuvre is characterized by a significant variety both in terms of content and technique. Teacher, watercolorist, etcher, graphic artist, lithographer, designer, painter, draftsman, textile artist, woodcut, murals, watercolor, batik, pencil, book decoration, book illustration, pattern design, illustration, animals, plants, figures, still life, portrait, birds, self-portrait are some of the words to describe him and his work.
The colors
Peach-Blossom, Flax-Flower, Archiearis and Leek are contemporary color interpretations inspired by the favorite hues of ‘The Roaring Twenties’, the period when the original woodcut was crafted.
