Background

Can you imagine that this wallpaper adorned the walls of stately homes in 1522? It can now be yours, giving your living spaces an authentic late-medieval awesome feel. ‘Medieval’ patterns are often representations of an imagined past, but this wallpaper is the real thing! With an iconic knotted trellis filled with roses and carnations (both flowers brimmed with symbolic meaning) this wallpaper tells many stories.

Woodcut
Designed 500 years ago, entire rooms were covered in multiple single-printed sheets. This pattern is based on a single 16th century woodcut print, which was not used as wallpaper at that time, and thus survived. The design of this woodcut is such that impressions of it match up on all four sides: for example, the half vases on the left and right make up a complete vase when put together. Here at The Capybara Papers we are in awe of the craftmanship this required and are proud and humbled that we are able to use this authentic pattern in our collection.

Bring the outdoors inside
A trellis (treillage) is an architectural structure made to support climbing foliage. Artists from all eras borrow the trellis from the garden as a design feature. This shows that the desire to bring the outdoors inside isn’t new! The grid pattern provides a visual structure and, filled with floral elements, it gives the illusion that nature is growing inward. It also gives this wallpaper the illusion of three-dimensionality. William Morris was definetly not the first to create a printed trellis wallpaper, but this anomynous artist may very well be!
